Design Configurations and Narratives

While design thinking is still in its hype curve (hence helping evangelising what design could be), we will assume here the role of design is to integrate insights and provoke changes. This requires moving from monocultures (marketing-centric or tech-centric) to place where the hybrid makes sense, and design practitioners are these agents able to articulate change making and sense making by providing “updated design configurations”. Design is everywhere and offers multiple dimensions, this talk will elaborate on the interrelations and interactions of “design as”, “design of” and “design for”.- We will also look how tech development (physical or digital) and business implementation are aligned with design, giving to interaction design a large territory of action, not limited to digital, but focusing on human to human interactions. The ability to abstract will be at the core of the questions we will explore here, with stories ranging from hospitality and culinary to transportation systems.


He is creative director of Architempo, a design agency based in Brussels, and also president of IxDA - Interaction Design Association (2018-2020). He had lead design teams of publishing companies in Belgium and France (Casterman, the publisher of a.o. Tintin; Groupe Flammarion) and got involved in R&D programs to explore storytelling with technologies, AR & VR installations for museums and public places. In 2004, he founded Architempo to explore the multiple dimensions of design: from interaction design to exhibitions (red dot design museum, St-Etienne Design Biennale), strategic design and innovation, interventions and conferences (chair of Interaction14 in Amsterdam). In 2007, he launched PechaKucha Night in Brussels. He is a regular speaker in international conferences and frequent jury member (in design, new media, cinema, and startups), and is a professor at the Institut Paul Bocuse.
